All About that Math!

April 5, 2016 by Allisonn Church Leave a Comment

Longtime CES Licensure Instructor, Matthew Beyranevand is passionate about math.  In his work as the Math and Science Coordinator for Chelmsford Public Schools, Matthew wants to get  all students excited about math.

Busting stereotypes about girls and math, four students from Chelmsford Middle School created a music video to encourage girls to get excited about math .  As part of a video series coordinated by Matthew, these young women wrote the lyrics, recorded the video and sang the song.  Matthew’s innovative strategy gets kids engaged with the topic and makes them more receptive to taking on more challenging concepts in math.

Congratulations to Chelmsford Middle Schoolers, Lyla El-Gamel, Sachi Badola, Danielle Mello and Georgia Horan for their creative and engaging work, and to Matthew for his innovative and exciting teaching!

Students and Technology – your input counts!

February 26, 2016 by Allisonn Church Leave a Comment

What do you think students should be learning about technology?  The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is asking for input on the new draft Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards.  These standards are designed to highlight the technology skills that all students should be developing with the support of their teachers.

The standards are listed by grade range (K-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12) and are organized into the following categories:

  • Computing and Society (Safety & Security; Ethics & Laws; Interpersonal & Societal Impact)
  • Digital Tools and Collaboration (Digital Tools; Collaboration & Communication; Research)
  • Computing Systems (Computing Devices; Human & Computer Partnerships; Networks; Services)
  • Computational Thinking (Abstraction; Algorithms; Data; Programming & Development; Modeling & Simulation)

Public input is an essential part of this process and the Board has committed to using comments to help refine the standards before they are adopted.  The public comment period is open through April 6, 2016.

Spring 2016 course registration is now open! Registration deadlines are staggered this semester, so pay close attention to the course and the location as you register. The deadline for most teacher courses offered in Northampton and most administrator courses offered in Marlborough is coming up quickly on December 30th.

Registration deadlines vary this semester due to new schedule arrangements that give our students greater flexibility. Courses begin, end, and meet face-to-face on separate dates in Northampton versus Marlborough so that teacher candidates can more easily find courses that accommodate their schedules.

For more information about course registration deadlines and details, visit our online course catalog. If you have any questions about registration, email registrar@collaborative.org.
