RETELL FAQs

April 15, 2014 by Allisonn Church Leave a Comment

What is RETELL?

RETELL stands for Rethinking Equity in Teaching for English Language Learners. It is a course designed to help core content teachers adequately support ELLs in their classrooms. Completion of a RETELL course leads to Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement for teachers.

Do I need to take an SEI endorsement course?

The RETELL/SEI requirement applies to all teachers in Massachusetts public schools, including charter schools and educational collaboratives. Any teacher endorsed for Initial licensure after June 30th, 2014 must obtain an SEI endorsement.

However, you do NOT need to take an SEI endorsement course if you are licensed as an ESL/ELL teacher.

Can I take an SEI Endorsement course through CES?

Yes. All Initial licensure enrollees with CES  must either complete an SEI endorsement course as part of their licensure program, or submit proof  that they have already obtained the SEI endorsement elsewhere.  Only enrollees in an Initial licensure program with the Collaborative will be able to take the SEI endorsement course through CES. If you are a program enrollee, you can register for an SEI Endorsement (RETELL) course here.

If you would like to sign up for an Initial licensure program through CES, please visit our website at collaborative.org/licensure.
