CES welcomes Sabine Jacques, who joins our professional development team as a Social Justice and Equity in Schools Specialist.
Jacques is a First Generation Haitian-American woman from Everett, MA who brings her passion for arts activism within the Black and Brown communities to her work as a social justice facilitator. A theater practitioner, actress, and Fulbright Scholar, she holds a BA in African-American studies, as well as a Multicultural Theater certificate, and is currently completing her Masters in International Education with a certificate in Social Justice Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was recently a Diversity Education Coordinator at UMass; and has already co-facilitated for CES a two part virtual Introduction to Social Justice training for a local public school. Jacques believes in the power of storytelling and its ability to provide space for vulnerability, healing, & joy.
While at UMass, Jacques was an undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Brown Paper Studio, a UMass theater devising course. Brown Paper Studio was developed in post-apartheid South Africa in 2002 by Prof Al-Bilali to express young people’s vision for their newly democratic country. The devising process combines original and selected text, music, movement, visual media and improvisation in a creative style.
She recently reflected on the importance of art in her life and work.
“Art is huge in my life,” Jacques said. “For me, art is self-definition, self-authorship… a way for me to look at myself and look at my Blackness, look at my ‘womanness’ and define what that is for me and find art that speaks to that for me, as well. It helps me engage in that self-authorship, and reminds me that I am a sovereign being…and I get to choose how I want to define myself and what form I want to find myself. Art allows me to feel expansive. I don’t know where I’d be without my art and my art family.”
We are excited to welcome her to the CES Social Justice and Equity in Schools team, and to expand and grow the work with her help and support.
