GREENFIELD — Greenfield High School students in grades eight through 12 will have the opportunity on Friday to do everything from work with elementary school students, provide music programs and make neck scarves out of recycled T-shirts, all as part of Community Service Learning Day.

The students will go out into their community from 8 to 11 a.m. to learn what it is like to serve others, said Shirley Gilfether, retired school administrator and one of the organizers of Community Service Learning Day.

Students will also fill blessing bags with toiletries and snacks; create holiday decorations for local families; cook holiday treats; make cards with seniors at the Senior Center; and provide custodial services within the schools and community. All items made by students and volunteers will go to local social service agencies, which will distribute them to those in need.

Gilfether said students will be available in front of the school on Barr Avenue throughout the morning to run a drive-up, drop-off donation site. Donations of nonperishable food items, diapers, and cat and dog food will support the local food pantry, Center for Self-Reliance; the diaper drive; and animal shelters.

“Thanks to the Greenfield Fire Department, students will have a heated shelter as they greet donors,” Gilfether said.
