STURBRIDGE, MA – Richard Cairn, of the Collaborative for Educational Services (CES) in Northampton, MA, has been named the 2016 recipient of the Janna Bremer Friend of Social Studies Award, at the Northeast Regional Conference for the Social Studies on Monday evening, April 4th in Sturbridge, MA.

The Janna Bremer Friend of Social Studies Award is “presented annually to one person in Massachusetts who has been supportive of and recognizes importance of social studies education in the state of Massachusetts,” according to Kaitlin Mills, representing the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies.

Cairn is the Director of the Emerging America program, which includes Library of Congress teaching with Primary Sources Program at CES, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History Institutes: “Forge of Innovation: The Springfield Armory and the Genesis of American Industry.” Cairn is a graduate of Yale University, and earned a Master of Public Affairs degree from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota.

Cairn is also a recognized national leader in service-learning, performance assessment, and environmental education. The author of numerous books and multimedia, he has designed and led hundreds of teacher workshops. He is a lifelong social justice activist.
